Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease where in the body starts destroying the small joints. This causes the tissue that lines the joints, called synovium, to inflame and thicken, and thereby cause deformities, severe pain and stiffness during movements. Long-term, this can completely damage the joint. Presence of RA can be confirmed by doing the RA Factor, C-reactive protein and also the anti-CCP tests. Raised ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) values in the blood test indicate chronic inflammation.

In the usual line of treatment, the inflammation is mostly targeted, and anti-inflammatory drugs like corticosteroids (steroids) are given. This is similar to the situation discussed in the case of Multiple Sclerosis, except the joints are targeted instead of the nerve sheath. Of course, this does not address the process of why the inflammation occurs in the first place. Otherwise, “disease modifying” drugs are given to reduce this inflammation, by directly compromising the immune system. For instance, methotrexate, salzopyrine, hydroxychloroquine, etc. suppress the immune system, which then leads to a whole series of risky situations and side effects because the immune system is extremely crucial for the overall health of the body.
Treatment should instead be aimed at reducing the tissue damage and repair of the damage that has already happened. By focusing on the free radical damage that occurs as a result of this autoimmune disease, the right choice of antioxidants, protein and calcium supplements gives a lot of relief. This does not disturb the functioning of the immune system, nor does it forcibly reduce the inflammation.
